Melee armour, used in the Skill icon of Attack, File:Attack icon Attack, Skill icon of Strength, File:Strength icon Strength and Skill icon of Defence, File:Defence icon Defence skills, is generally made out of some kind of metal. There is a "default" (regular) series of Link to armour armour, consisting of Link to Bronze equipment#Armour Bronze, Link to Iron armour Iron, Link to Steel equipment#Armour Steel, Link to Black equipment#Armour Black/Link to White armour White, Link to Mithril armour Mithril, Link to Adamant equipment#Armour Adamant, Link to Rune equipment#Armour Rune, and Link to Dragon equipment#Armour Dragon (in ascending order of the quality of the armour). For each piece of armour, there is a counterpart made for each other type of metal (with the exception of Dragon armour which has some items yet to be released).

All these can be made from the Skill icon of Smithing, File:Smithing icon Smithing skill, with the exception of Black, White, and Dragon, which can only be purchased or received from a Link to Drops monster drop.

All armour items not made from those metal types can be considered "special" and generally cannot be made from the Smithing skill, but rather sold by an NPC or obtained as a monster drop. Some players may consider these more desirable, as they often provide higher bonuses than other forms of armour.

Melee armour sets

A set generally comprises a Link to Full helmet full helm, Link to platebody platebody, Link to platelegs platelegs/Link to Plateskirt skirt, and a Link to kiteshield kiteshield where applicable. It's very typical among the Link to metal metal armours.

Set items

Medium helmets

A dragon medium helmet

Bronze, Iron, Steel, Black, White, Mithril, Adamant, Rune, Dragon

Link to Medium helmet Medium helmets offer little protection compared to Link to Full helmet full helms (shown below) from most Link to combat combat forms, but also do little to inhibit using any Link to combat style combat style. This makes them a good choice for players who favour Link to Melee Melee, but want the opportunity to use Skill icon of Magic, File:Magic icon Magic and Skill icon of Ranged, File:Ranged icon Ranged. But if you prefer Melee-fighting, the full helm is a better choice.

Full helmets

A dragon full helmet

Bronze, Iron, Steel, Black, White, Mithril, Adamant, Rune, Dragon

Link to Full helmet Full helmets encase the whole of the players head and provide better Skill icon of Ranged, File:Ranged icon Ranged and Link to Melee Melee Skill icon of Defence, File:Defence icon Defence than other helmets. It does, however, impose larger negative modifiers to Skill icon of Magic, File:Magic icon Magic and Ranged attacks, but many rangers prefer them for their Defence bonuses and accept the negative attack modifiers, which are significantly smaller than their magical attack penalty.

Chainbodies

A dragon chainbody

Bronze, Iron, Steel, Black, White, Mithril, Adamant, Rune, Dragon

Link to Chainbody Chainbodies are made up of small rings linked together. They are particularly useful for deflecting Link to Slash weapons slashing weapons and absorbing the impact of Link to Crush weapons crush attacks. Chainmail is weak against Link to Stab weapons stabbing weapons as small pointed blades can pierce the rings, as can Link to Arrows arrows, therefore it is less effective at defending against Skill icon of Ranged, File:Ranged icon Ranged attacks. Chainmail is quite flexible and so does not penalise a ranger's Skill icon of Attack, File:Attack icon Attack bonus, though its metal construction does impede a Skill icon of Magic, File:Magic icon mage's accuracy somewhat. However, they offer a lesser Magic Defence penalty than Link to Platebody platebodies.

Platebodies

A dragon platebody

Bronze, Iron, Steel, Black, White, Mithril, Adamant, Rune, Dragon

Link to Platebody Platebodies are much heavier and stronger than Link to Chainbody chainbodies, providing the higher Link to Slash weapons slash, Link to Stab weapons stab, and Skill icon of Ranged, File:Ranged icon Ranged Skill icon of Defence, File:Defence icon Defence bonuses. Platebodies are weakest against Link to Crush weapons crushing and Skill icon of Magic, File:Magic icon Magic attacks, as they conduct Magic and cannot absorb the impact of a crush attack as well as Link to dragonhide dragonhide or chain armour. Rangers and mages are at a great disadvantage trying to aim their Ranged and distance magical attacks in this restrictive and heavy metal armour. The Link to Dragon Slayer Dragon Slayer Link to Quests quest is required to wear the Item image of %7B%7B%3ARune+platebody%7D%7D, File:Rune platebody Rune platebody as well as the Item image of %7B%7B%3ADragon+platebody%7D%7D, File:Dragon platebody Dragon platebody.

Platelegs and plateskirts

A pair of dragon platelegs
A dragon plateskirt

BronzeIronSteelBlackWhiteMithrilAdamantRuneDragon

Link to Platelegs Platelegs and Link to plateskirt plateskirts are a vital part of a warrior's Link to armour armour, and provide the second best defensive bonuses after the Link to platebody platebody. As with all Link to Dragon equipment Dragon equipment, the Item image of %7B%7B%3ADragon+platelegs%7D%7D, File:Dragon platelegs Dragon platelegs/Item image of %7B%7B%3ADragon+plateskirt%7D%7D, File:Dragon plateskirt plateskirt cannot be made via the Skill icon of Smithing, File:Smithing icon Smithing skill.

Square shields

A dragon square shield

BronzeIronSteelBlackWhiteMithrilAdamantRuneDragon

The Link to square shield square shield has adequate Link to Melee Melee and Skill icon of Ranged, File:Ranged icon Ranged Skill icon of Defence, File:Defence icon Defence bonuses, and does not penalise Ranged or Magic attacks as much as the Link to kiteshield kiteshield. In Melee, a square shield is weakest against Link to Crush weapons crush attacks, but stronger towards Link to Stab weapons stab. Square shields are not often used, as most players prefer the kiteshield for its higher Defence bonuses. In similarity towards Link to medium helmet medium helmets, square shields provide less Ranged and Magic attack penalties and could be more preferred by those who aren't using Melee.

Kiteshields

A dragon kiteshield

Bronze, Iron, Steel, Black, White, Mithril, Adamant, Rune, Dragon

Link to Kiteshield Kiteshields offer better Skill icon of Defence, File:Defence icon Defence than a Link to square shield square shield, although like most heavier armour it is awkward to use in combination with Skill icon of Magic, File:Magic icon Magic and Skill icon of Ranged, File:Ranged icon Ranged. Kiteshields are marginally weaker against Link to Stab weapons stabbing attacks.

Metal gloves

A pair of barrows gloves

Bronze, Iron, Steel, Black, White, Mithril, Adamant, Rune, Dragon, Barrows

The Chat head image of Culinaromancer, File:Culinaromancer chathead Culinaromancer's Link to Culinaromancer's gloves metal gloves can be bought from the Link to Culinaromancer's Chest Culinaromancer's chest after completing varying numbers of Link to Recipe for Disaster Recipe for Disaster subquests, the exception being Item image of %7B%7B%3AWhite+gloves%7D%7D, File:White gloves White gloves, which are purchased from Chat head image of Sir Vyvin, File:Sir Vyvin chathead Sir Vyvin. White gloves are also the only tradeable metal gloves.

Metal gloves provide good protection against all attack styles. Item image of %7B%7B%3ABarrows+gloves%7D%7D, File:Barrows gloves Barrows gloves give the best Skill icon of Attack, File:Attack icon Attack bonuses for all Link to Combat Options Attack styles of any pair of gloves, and also the highest Skill icon of Strength, File:Strength icon Strength bonus. These gloves also do not degrade.

Defenders

Bronze, Iron, Steel, Black, Mithril, Adamant, Rune, Dragon, Avernic

Dragon defender detail

Metal Link to defender defenders are small Link to dagger dagger-like items worn in the Link to Worn Equipment#Shield slot Shield slot. Defenders make a trade off whereby they sacrifice much of a shields defensive capabilities to further boost offensive stats and are as such desirable for warriors who favour stronger and more accurate attacks over survivability. They cannot be made nor bought, only received as a drop from Cyclops cyclopes on the top floor of the Link to Warriors' Guild Warriors' Guild. Once the first - Item image of %7B%7B%3ABronze+defender%7D%7D, File:Bronze defender bronze - defender is received, it must be shown to Chat head image of Kamfreena, File:Kamfreena chathead Kamfreena outside the room before an Item image of %7B%7B%3AIron+defender%7D%7D, File:Iron defender iron one may be received, which must then be shown before a Item image of %7B%7B%3ASteel+defender%7D%7D, File:Steel defender steel one may be received, etc. Entrance to the cyclops' room is temporary and the Guild's Warrior guild token 1 tokens are required for access. The owned amount slowly decreases as one is in the room.

Steel full helm chathead
Steel platebody detail

Link to Steel equipment Steel armour and weapons require level 5 Skill icon of Defence, File:Defence icon Defence and Skill icon of Attack, File:Attack icon Attack respectively to equip and may also be Skill icon of Smithing, File:Smithing icon smithed from Item image of %7B%7B%3Asteel+bar%7D%7D, File:steel bar steel bars, which are the result of smelting Item image of %7B%7B%3Airon+ore%7D%7D, File:iron ore iron ore with Item image of %7B%7B%3Acoal%7D%7D, File:coal coal.

Black armour

Black full helm chathead
Black platebody detail

Link to Black equipment#Armour Black armour, as worn by the Link to Kinshra Kinshra, has an evil and dangerous look, but is not any better than Link to white armour white armour. It is, in fact, worse, not offering any Link to Prayer#Prayer_bonus Prayer bonuses. Black armour, like white, cannot be Skill icon of Smithing, File:Smithing icon smithed, only received as a drop or bought from several shops. A number of different versions exist, all received from Link to Treasure Trails Treasure Trails. White armour

White full helm chathead
White platebody detail

Link to White armour White armour does not offer great defensive bonuses, although better than Link to steel steel, but does offer decent Link to Prayer#Prayer_bonus Prayer bonuses. Aside from the Prayer bonus, white armour is the same as Link to Black equipment#Armour black armour requiring 10 Skill icon of Defence, File:Defence icon Defence; however, it also requires the completion of Sir Amik Varze chathead Wanted to equip. White armour may be bought from Chat head image of Sir Vyvin, File:Sir Vyvin chathead Sir Vyvin on the second floor of Link to White Knights' Castle Falador Castle with sufficient White Knight rank, which is received from killing Link to Black knights Black Knights. Proselyte hauberk detail

Link to Proselyte armour Proselyte armour is worn by Temple Knight proselytes who have advanced in rank and requires 30 Skill icon of Defence, File:Defence icon Defence and 20 Skill icon of Prayer, File:Prayer icon Prayer. Players may buy the armour off Chat head image of Sir Tiffy Cashien, File:Sir Tiffy Cashien chathead Sir Tiffy Cashien after completing Link to The Slug Menace The Slug Menace. Mithril armour

Mithril full helm chathead
Mithril platebody detail

Link to Mithril Mithril is a medium level Link to metal metal, requiring 20 Skill icon of Defence, File:Defence icon Defence to equip all pieces of the armour. Adamant armour

Adamant full helm chathead
Adamant platebody detail

Link to Adamant equipment#Armour Adamant armour is the second highest Skill icon of Smithing, File:Smithing icon smithable armour and green in colour. It offers decent bonuses and is quite cheap and as such often used by Link to Player killing player killers who do not want to risk losing their own armour. Fremennik armour

Yak-hide, Rockshell, Helm, Shield, Warrior helm, Berserker helm, Helm of neitiznot

This helmet can be bought as well as dropped by Link to Dagannoth Dagannoths. Its stats are equal to the Warrior's helm.

Helm of Neitiznot

Helm of neitiznot

The Item image of %7B%7B%3AHelm+of+neitiznot%7D%7D, File:Helm of neitiznot Helm of Neitiznot is by far the most popular Item image of %7B%7B%3AFremennik+helm%7D%7D, File:Fremennik helm Fremennik helm. They are made during Link to The Fremennik Isles The Fremennik Isles from Item image of %7B%7B%3Ayak-hide%7D%7D, File:yak-hide yak-hide and split Item image of %7B%7B%3AArctic+pine+logs%7D%7D, File:Arctic pine logs Arctic pine logs. Rock-shell armour

Rock-shell helm chathead

However, you need 850 Link to Pest Control Pest Control points. The Item image of %7B%7B%3AVoid+melee+helm%7D%7D, File:Void melee helm Melee helm grants the player a +10% bonus towards accuracy and damage, if the player is wearing the rest of the Void Knight equipment.

As some players find it more effective to wear other full sets of Link to armour armour, such as Link to Bandos armour Bandos or Link to Barrows equipment Barrows armour, than a full set of Void Knight armour due to the Defence bonuses, this item is not frequently bought. However, those who do buy it can see a higher max hit and a higher average hit. Additionally, it Link to Combat style classes as a Link to Combat_pure#Hybrid hybrid set (besides the helmet), and as such gives equal Magic, Ranged and Link to Melee Melee Defence, thus making it an alternative choice in Link to Minigames minigames where hybridding is common.
