Black dragons are very powerful monsters, and like all other dragons, an Anti-dragon shield or Antifire potion is needed in order to protect yourself from their powerful magic-based fire. They are the most powerful chromatic dragon. They are not as popular a monster to train on as the weaker blue dragon, but their guaranteed drops, black dragonhide and dragon bones, are some of the most valuable guaranteed drops of all monsters. They are also hunted for the draconic visage.

Locations

Black dragons can only be found in four locations:

• Taverley Dungeon - Requires dusty key (Or 70 agility pipe squeeze, or 80 agility spike trap jump) - They can easily be safe spotted at this location.
• Evil Chicken's Lair after starting the Sir Amik Varze subquest of Recipe for Disaster. There's a safe spot available here.
• Stronghold Slayer Cave- Requires having a black dragon task in order to attack them.
• Lava Maze Dungeon located in the heart of the Lava Maze.

Strengths and weaknesses

Black dragons have an extremely high defence, one of the highest of any monster in RuneScape. As with all dragons, an anti-dragon shield or a dragonfire shield is essential when fighting them with melee. Without one, you can be hit extremely hard by dragonfire.

They can be ranged or maged safely in all of their locations. You could also try killing them with a halberd; however this is not advised as it may take a very long amount of time. 

Ranged is the most advised of the method due to all dragons having high magic defence and the occasional accident occurring with the halberd leaving the player completely vulnerable to their very powerful dragonfire attack.
