Buttons can be thieved from H.A.M. Members in the H.A.M. Hideout behind the Lumbridge General Store, earned from the Fishing Trawler minigame, dug up at the Digsite, or dropped by level 12, 18 and 22 H.A.M. Guards. You will need at least 15 Thieving to be able to thieve female H.A.M. Members and 20 Thieving for male H.A.M. Members. They require level 3 Crafting to polish, yielding 5 Crafting experience and results in the message: "You rub the buttons on your clothes and they become more shiny." This changes them into polished buttons, which are used in Animal Magnetism.
