A cracked sample is found whilst digging or searching the chests in the building south of the Digsite. If you use it on a Rock pick, it will disintegrate. However, if you haven't yet finished your certification exam, nothing interesting happens. There are currently no uses for a cracked sample. It is considered a useless item because it can't be traded, gives no coins when alchemised, and can't be used in any way.
