Dark beasts are monsters that require 90 Slayer to kill, and are found in the Mourner Tunnels as well as in the Dragon's Den (north-west) area of the Catacombs of Kourend. They are the only creature in the game to drop the dark bow and the death talisman.
Dark beasts attack with both Melee and Magic; however, they will only use Magic if they are attacked by the player first, or if they cannot attack the player with Melee. Dark beasts do not follow tolerance rules, and are always aggressive to the player regardless of how long they have stayed in their presence. Their highly accurate melee attacks means that using Protect from Melee is recommended when killing dark beasts.
A combat level of 100 is required to have them assigned to the player as a Slayer task, unless you have spoken to a Slayer master about the difficulty of assignments. You will still need to have 90 Slayer and start Mourning's Ends Part II to the point where you access the tunnels to be assigned them.
Dark beasts are an often underestimated method of training combat stats. Using prayer prolonging gear, a powerful weapon, and potions (stat boosting and prayer potions), players may kill these beasts fairly quickly, as their Defence is only average. The cost of buying the needed potions may be offset by dark bow drops.
When given a dark beast task, it is recommended to kill them in the Mourner Tunnels due to their higher numbers, as there are only two dark beasts in the Catacombs, which results in slower kill rates per hour. Remember that if you do not bring a Slayer ring to teleport to the dark beasts (requiring completion of the said quest) or enter the tunnels via the death altar, you will need to enter through the headquarters, requiring a full mourner set (with no non-regulated items being worn) and the new key to enter the tunnels.
