Death runes are one of the runes used to cast Magic. They are required to cast medium-level missile spells. Members those with 65 Runecrafting and who have completed Mourning's End Part II can craft death runes at the death altar by using pure essence on it, with each essence yielding one death rune.No staff can be used to substitute for death runes, however many monsters commonly drop death runes such as Ankou, Nechryael and Dark beast.

- The symbol on a death rune is a skull with two crossbones.
- A grownup cat can be given to a citizen in West Ardougne in exchange for 100 death runes.
