Although Firemaking is a relatively easy and linear skill, it requires a great deal of mental concentration and is generally impossible to afk (there are of course numerous exceptions to this, for example Shade burning and Dorgesh-Kaan Light orbs, to name a couple). Furthermore, ironman accounts must either chop their own logs or obtain them as slayer drops, or through Kingdom Management--this obstacle compounds the problem of training the skill.

As of 16 April 2015, 764 players have obtained skill mastery in Firemaking. Four (4) of these players were ironmen, while only one (1) of these four was an ultimate ironman. The first ultimate ironman to obtain skill mastery in Firemaking was Ngc Sombrero. The relative scarcity of players with skill mastery is generally understood to be the result of a supposed popular consensus that Firemaking is a "useless skill." While hyperbolic, the arguments against Firemaking consist in the objections that it:

# Provides almost no benefits whatsoever outside of reaching Achievement diary goals & quest prerequisites.

# Cannot be trained passively, establishing it as a skill which requires continuous mental effort. Coupled with the first objection, this objection is in practice quite significant.

Still other players contend that the skill mastery cape is a prestigous cape for precisely these above stated reasons. Others may contend that the skillcape is cosmetically beautiful, thereby confirming that there is no currently understood objective standard to judge one cape or skill by. {{Infobox Bonuses

Firemaking cape detail
Firemaking cape (t) detail

A Firemaking cape is a Cape of Accomplishment. It can be purchased for 99,000 coins along with the Firemaking hood from Ignatius Vulcan (who can be found south of Seers' Village) by players who have achieved skill mastery in the Firemaking skill.

Firemaking cape emote

A player performing the firemaking cape's emote.

Like all skill capes, the Firemaking cape gives +9 to all defensive stats, and also a +4 bonus to prayer if it is trimmed, which requires a separate skill at level 99. The cape is automatically trimmed if this condition is met.

When the firemaking cape is equipped or in the inventory, it will act as an inextinguishable light source. Because of this feature, High and Low Alchemy spells cannot be used on it.

As of 20 April 2019, there are 72,906 current members that have achieved level 99 in Firemaking.
