As Karil uses Ranged, his armour gives a high Magic Defence bonus, making it popular for fighting enemies with powerful Magic attacks. Karil's crossbow, unlike many other crossbows, is two handed and requires a special type of ammunition called Bolt racks. Bolt racks can be obtained by opening chests in the Barrows minigame, buying from Ak-Haranu on the Port Phasmatys docks for 50 coins each, buying them from the Emblem Trader for 360 Bounty Hunter points each, or trading with another player. Karil's can be used in PvP to stop players from escaping via Agility shortcuts.

Although many parts of it see use, the full set is rarely seen in unison. A common complaint is how situational the set effect is and how low the stats are, for such a high level degradable armour set. When combined with a blessed coif, black d'hide armour gives better Melee defensive bonuses than Karil's set (though Karil's set has better stats in Magic and Ranged Defence), is much cheaper, and does not degrade. Karil's crossbow is also less accurate than a Rune crossbow, and the ammunition is weaker than steel bolts (as Bolt racks give +55 Ranged Strength). However, the Karil's crossbow does have the speed of a Magic shortbow, and the bolt racks match the strength of amethyst arrows.

The set effect of Karil's set is a source of criticism, as it is seen as not very useful, especially as it has no effect on NPCs. This has been a long-going issue for Karil's as well as Torag's set owners wanting a better set effect compared to the other brothers. Karil's armour equipped

A player wearing a full set of Karil's equipment.

Karil the Tainted's equipment is a set of Ranged armour and crossbow from the Barrows minigame. Completing the Barrows minigame does not guarantee players will get a Barrows item. The whole set requires 70 Defence and 70 Ranged to wield. 70 Defence to wear the armour and 70 Ranged to wield the weapon.

Set effect

Tainted Shot

A player activating Karil's set effect, Tainted Shot.

Tainted Shot: If the Ranged attack is successful, it has a 25% chance of lowering the target player's Agility level by 20%.

The set effect of Karil's set is a source of criticism, as it is seen as not very useful, especially as it has no effect on NPCs. This has been a long-going issue for Karil's as well as Torag's set owners wanting a better set effect compared to the other brothers. With the release of Deadman mode, the set has found a niché use for cornering people relying on their agility level to escape.
