Logs and Experience

Level Subject & Location Notes
1-15 File:Woodcutting-icon.png Regular trees around Draynor Village

Chop them down around Draynor. Evergreen, north of Falador and between Barbarian Village, is also an alternative. You need 97 logs for levels 1 to 15.

15-40 File:Woodcutting-icon.png Oak trees southwest of West Varrock Bank There are a few oaks just a tad bit southwest of said bank. Otherwise, Draynor or Tree Gnome Stronghold has some fairly close to its respective bank. Seer's Village also has a few oak just outside its bank. Expect around 18,000-45,000 XP per hour. You need 929 oak logs for levels 15 to 40.
40-60 File:Woodcutting-icon.png Willow trees at Barbarian Outpost, Draynor, or Seers' Village Don't forget to upgrade to a Rune axe at 41 Woodcutting! If planning to get 99 Woodcutting off these, it'll take 192,552 willows.
Alternatively, one can advance to teaks southwest of Castle Wars requiring 35 Woodcutting. One will need 2,957 teak logs from level 35 to 60 or 153,083 teaks for level 99. It's about 30,000-60,000 XPH at willows, or 60,000-100,000 XPH with teaks.
60-75 File:Woodcutting-icon.png Maple trees at Seers' Village Use a Dragon axe at 61 Woodcutting only if it can be afforded! It'll take 9,367 maple logs to get to level 75 at 30,000-40,000 XPH.
Also, mahogany surpasses maple once 50 Woodcutting, which would then require 8,873 mahogany logs to achieve level 75, is reached as long as one has sufficient trading sticks for the Hardwood Grove. About 300-400 mahogany logs per hour could be cut for 45,000-48,000 XPH.
75+ File:Woodcutting-icon.png Yew trees in Catherby, Seers' Village, Tree Gnome Stronghold, or Edgeville 67,566 yew logs will be needed to reach 99! Yews are about 23,000-38,000 XPH. At level 80, players can cut yew trees at a decent rate. Keep in mind that the reason players should not start cutting yews at level 60 is because of the extremely slow rate at which the logs are obtained. Good spots are behind Varrock Palace and by the entrance of the Edgeville dungeon. There are four yew trees west of Rimmington, but they are a long distance from a bank, which does not make the spot very popular. There are also 2 yew trees south of the Falador east bank and 3 yew trees above Nieve and her dungeon in the Tree Gnome Stronghold (The bank is 5 squares away from one tree, up the spiral staircase). These trees are also fairly close to the bank as well. Cutting yews will be very slow experience, but in the long run, players will gain lots of money.
Tree Level Experience Log Notes
Normal 1 25 Logs Normal trees include dead trees and evergreen trees, as they give the same amount of experience. These trees are the most common in RuneScape, as they can be found anywhere.
Achey 1 25 Achey tree logs These trees are used for the members-only quest Big Chompy Bird Hunting, to make Ogre bows and arrows.
Oak 15 37.5 Oak logs These trees are fairly easy to find. They are nearby many cities, allowing quick access to a bank.
Willow 30 67.5 Willow logs These trees are found near water. You can find them in and around Port SarimDraynor VillageSeer's Village, and Champions' Guild.
Teak 35 85 Teak logs

These trees can be found in the Hardwood Grove by Tai Bwo Wannai, a village on member servers. Players must pay 100 trading sticks, the currency in Tai Bwo Wannai, each time they enter the fenced-in area where the trees are.

There is a single tree in the woods south-west of Castle Wars.

They are also located in the desert near Nardah.

There are a few teak trees on Ape Atoll near the entrance to the dungeon used in Monkey Madness, west of where you land from Crash Island.

Maple 45 100 Maple logs Maple trees can only be found on member servers in Seer's Village. However, the logs can be traded in and burned in free worlds by free players and members.
Hollow 45 82.5 Bark These are found east of Canifis, a village on member servers. When cut, they can be very profitable.
Mahogany 50 125 Mahogany logs

These can be found in the Hardwood Grove by Tai Bwo Wannai, a village on member servers. Players must pay 100 trading sticks, the currency in Tai Bwo Wannai, each time they enter the fenced-in area where the trees are.

They are also found on Ape Atoll.

Arctic pine 54 40 Arctic pine logs These are found on the island of Neitiznot, these logs are more known for Firemaking experience than woodcutting.
Yew 60 175 Yew logs These trees give the best experience for a single log for free players. Free-to-play players can find these trees at Edgeville, south of Falador, and north of Varrock Castle. Members can find these trees in the Seers' Village churchyard, west of Catherby along with several south of the flax fields in seers. Commonly cut by players wishing to make money.
Magic 75 250 Magic logs These trees are members-only. Cutting these trees takes time as they give logs at a very slow rate. You can find these trees at the Mage Training Arena, Sorcerer's Tower, and southwest of Camelot. There are also a few just west of the south ladder to the bank in the Gnome Stronghold. Commonly cut by players wishing to make money.

Level 1 through 15

Players can start off by buying an Iron Axe from Bob's Brilliant Axes in Lumbridge. As the most abundant of all tree varieties in Runescape, players can begin training almost anywhere. Many surround the goblin house in Lumbridge, the jail in Port Sarim, or surrounding Draynor Manor.

Players should cut trees until they reach level 20. Training at Draynor Village, which is surrounded by many trees and has an easy access bank, is highly recommended. To save time on bank trips, a knife can be carried to fletch the logs into arrow shafts, since they stack in the inventory. Players interested in making a profit should bank all of their logs, and sell them in bulk for about 160 each. If not, they can be stored for training Firemaking. At level 6 Woodcutting, head to Bob's Brilliant Axes again to buy a steel axe, which will cut trees more quickly.

Level 15 through 30

Players can cut oak trees. A good spot is east of Draynor Village's bank. Low level players should be careful here, as level 26 Jail Guards patrol the area. The area with 3 oak trees west of Varrock, near the east bank, is a good choice for lower levelled players. It is right next to a bank, so players can chop, bank, and then sell the logs. Other places are southwest of Varrock and northwest of Lumbridge and Seers' Village.

Levels 30 through 99

Fast Experience - Willows (30-99)

At level 30, players can cut willow trees. While it is a long time until players start cutting yews, it is recommended they stay with willows as the logs can be obtained at a much faster rate compared to other trees.

  • A good spot is beside Draynor Village's bank, as there are 5 willow trees there, though it is often crowded during the day.
  • If banking is not desired, good willow tree spots are also in northeast Port Sarim, south of Rimmington, or north of Lumbridge. They should switch to yews at around level 80.
  • The willows outside of Barbarian Assault is an ideal spot.

Fast Experience - Teaks (35-99)

Teak trees are the fastest experience to 99. By powercutting Teak south of Castle Wars, it is possible to obtain up to 100k xp per hour. However, there is only one Teak tree south of Castle Wars. Therefore, one may wish to complete the Jungle Potion quest and cut them in the Hardwood Grove in Tai-Bwo-Wannai instead, as multiple trees can be found here. Also, there are 3 Teak Trees on Ape Atoll, at the eastern most Woodcutting symbol on the map.

Maple Logs (45-99)

4 Maple trees can be found in Seers' Village, behind the bank. They grant 100xp each. Additionally, Maple logs are useful for increasing the Fletching skill. Fletching an unstrung longbow will grant 58.3xp, and stringing one will grant another 58.3xp on top of that. A strung maple longbow will sell for around 300gp, making Maple logs a viable (albeit slow) method of making money.

Money Making - Yews (75-90)

Above level 75, players can cut yew trees at a decent rate. Players should not start cutting yews at level 60 due to the extremely slow rate at which the logs are obtained. Good spots are

  • There are four yew trees west of Rimmington, but they are a long distance from a bank, which does not make the spot very popular.
  • There are also 2 yew trees south of the Falador east bank.
  • Three yew trees are very close to the bank in the Gnome Stronghold.
  • There are several yew trees west of Catherby, just south of the Seer's flax field. This is one of the best spots to chop as a bank is nearby.
  • 1 Yew tree inside of the Lumbridge graveyard.
  • 1 Yew tree just north-east of Varrock.
  • 1 Yew tree directly north of Varrock east bank.

Money Making - Magic Trees (90-99)

Once players reach 75 Woodcutting, they will be able to cut down Magic trees, although cutting them will be incredibly slow at this level. The most convenient place to cut them is south of the Yew trees in Seer's Village, with a total of 7 in the vicinity of the Sorcerer's Tower. Another option is the 3 Magic trees just west of the Tree Gnome Stronghold's bank. Both of these areas tend to be crowded. Cutting these trees provides the least experience-per-hour, but their logs are the most profitable of all.
