Rune dragons are a metal dragon that is first encountered and fought during the Dragon Slayer II quest.
They can be found in the Lithkren Vault after the quest in the eastern chamber. To get back to the laboratory, players can travel using the rowboat from the quest or, after completion, taking a digsite pendant and using it on the strange machine north of the rune dragon room, adding a teleport straight to Lithkren on it.
Rune dragons have multiple attacks, similar to mithril and adamant dragons. Along with standard dragonfire attacks, they have a standard Melee, Ranged and Magic attack, as well as two unique attacks:
- Two small bolts of electricity are launched onto the floor, which will then move to other tiles around the player, dealing small but rapid damage if the player doesn't move. Wearing insulated boots will minimise this damage from 6-7 to 1-2.
- A Ranged attack that takes the effect of enchanted onyx bolts, in which the dragon will heal for whatever it hits on the player. This hits through Protect from Missiles.
At 99 Construction, players can add them to their player-owned house dungeon for 25,000,000 coins.

Trivia
- Upon release, rune dragons had a 1/3 chance of their dragon bones drop being replaced by superior dragon bones. This was removed from their drop table in an update on 25 January 2018 as part of a balancing change.
