The Rune kiteshield is the best smithable kiteshield, requiring 40 Defence to wield. A player with 97 Smithing can make the shield by using three rune bars and a hammer on an anvil, granting 225 Smithing experience.
The rune kiteshield is often used as a tank shield by low-risk and void rangers; despite the negative ranged attack bonus, it is much cheaper, and provides a substantial melee defence bonus, which the Odium ward lacks.
Players with at least level 43 Crafting are also able to paint the rune kiteshield at a player-owned house to create an untradeable heraldic shield, provided that they have visited Sir Renitee to obtain a crest in advance.
