This article is about the monsters in the Stronghold of Security and Catacombs of Kourend. For other uses, see Shade.

Shades are monsters that resides in the fourth level of the Stronghold of Security: Sepulcher of Death and Catacombs of Kourend. The shades in the Stronghold of Security are found next to the ladder leading to the current floor alongside a Zombie, while the ones in the Catacombs of Kourend are found in the northernmost area of Reeking Cove, south from the steel dragons. It is worth noting that combat experience gained while fighting the shades in the Stronghold of Security is drastically reduced; the player will gain 1 experience for 10 damage dealt.

As shades are undead, they are affected by the Salve amulet and Crumble Undead. They are also extremely weak to the Gadderhammer, although a dragon scimitar deals more damage on average.

Shades in the Stronghold of Security can be safespotted using a skeleton found on the eastern side in the middle northern part of the room.

History

Before the random event update in 2014, the shade used to appear randomly when burying bones. On appearance, it would say "Leave this place!". As with similar guardian random events, the shade's combat level and stats scaled with the player's combat level, as well as only being attackable by the targeted player.

The shade was somewhat rare, as pay-to-play players rarely buried bones in high enough quantities to activate this random event. Also, Prayer had two other random events that could occur while training it: Zombie and Leo the Gravedigger. Shades would not appear if training Prayer via the Ectofuntus or a POH altar.
