Shades are monsters that reside in the fourth level of the Stronghold of Security: Sepulcher of Death and in the Catacombs of Kourend. The shades in the Stronghold of Security are found next to the ladder leading to the current floor alongside a Zombie, while the ones in the Catacombs of Kourend are found in the northernmost area of Reeking Cove, south from the steel dragons. It is worth noting that combat experience gained while fighting the shades in the Stronghold of Security is drastically reduced; the player will gain 1 experience for 10 damage dealt.

  +
As shades are undead, they are affected by the Salve amulet and Crumble Undead. They are also extremely weak to the Gadderhammer, although a dragon scimitar deals more damage on average.
Shades may be assigned as a Slayer task by Vannaka and Mazchna. In addition to 'Shades' themselves, Loar Shades, Phrin Shades, Riyl Shade, Asyn Shades, and Fiyr Shades, which can be found in Mort'ton or the nearby Shade Catacombs can also be slain to fulfill the task. Since shades (the former random event monster variety) give low combat and slayer experience, they are not recommended for completing slayer tasks. Note: To access the shade catacombs, players must have completed the Shades of Mort'ton quest.

  +
They are generally regarded as a terrible way to complete the "Shades" slayer task due to their high damage and high hitpoints (the better choice being Loar Shades in Mort'ton), with the only notable drops being shade robe pieces, which have little practicality.
It is recommended to use magic to slay shades.

Shades in the Stronghold of Security can be safespotted using a skeleton found on the eastern side in the middle northern part of the room. They also have reduced xp rates amounting to 4xp per slayer kill
Additional damage can be done to shades through the use of the salve amulet or the gadderhammer weapon.

History
Since their removal as a random event, regular shades appear in the Stronghold of Security and the Catacombs of Kourend. If you plan on doing Shades for your Slayer task, it is recommended to slay them outside of Mort'ton as those are combat level 40. You can also slay regular shades on the fourth level of the Stronghold. There is a Safespot in the room when you enter, behind the skeleton at the northernmost point. However, these are a lot harder to slay, and are combat level 159. The shades in the Stronghold of Security only provide 5 slayer xp if you're doing them on a slayer task.

Before the random event update in 2014, the shade used to appear randomly when burying bones. On appearance, it would say "Leave this place!". As with similar guardian random events, the shade's combat level and stats scaled with the player's combat level, as well as only being attackable by the targeted player.

  +
The shade was somewhat rare, as pay-to-play players rarely buried bones in high enough quantities to activate this random event. Also, Prayer had two other random events that could occur while training it: Zombie and Leo the Gravedigger. Shades would not appear if training Prayer via the Ectofuntus or a POH altar.

Stronghold of Security Catacombs of Kourend

Shades are monsters that reside in the fourth level of the Stronghold of Security: Sepulcher of Death and in the Catacombs of Kourend. The shades in the Stronghold of Security are found next to the ladder leading to the current floor alongside a Zombie, while the ones in the Catacombs of Kourend are found in the northernmost area of Reeking Cove, south from the steel dragons. It is worth noting that combat experience gained while fighting the shades in the Stronghold of Security is drastically reduced; the player will gain 1 experience for 10 damage dealt.

As shades are undead, they are affected by the Salve amulet and Crumble Undead. They are also extremely weak to the Gadderhammer, although a dragon scimitar deals more damage on average.

They are generally regarded as a terrible way to complete the "Shades" slayer task due to their high damage and high hitpoints (the better choice being Loar Shades in Mort'ton), with the only notable drops being shade robe pieces, which have little practicality.

Shades in the Stronghold of Security can be safespotted using a skeleton found on the eastern side in the middle northern part of the room. They also have reduced xp rates amounting to 4xp per slayer kill

History

Before the random event update in 2014, the shade used to appear randomly when burying bones. On appearance, it would say "Leave this place!". As with similar guardian random events, the shade's combat level and stats scaled with the player's combat level, as well as only being attackable by the targeted player.
