Tradeable items can be:
- Traded to other players for coins or other items.
- Sold to a general store or speciality shop (see Prices).
- High-alched or Low-alched into coins (some untradeable items can still be alchemized).
- Placed on tables.
When RuneScape was first released, all items could be traded. However, following complaints that quests were too easy this way, many quest items were made non-tradeable.
Tradeable items, if dropped, appear on the ground or on the floor if in a building just like non-tradeable items. The difference is that after some time, tradeable items become visible to other players.
Some untradeable items can be given to another player by using them with the recipient.
With the addition of the Grand Exchange, players are now able to buy and sell most tradeable items through the Grand Exchange interface. However, some items cannot be sold in the Grand Exchange even though they can be traded among players.
